Exercise During Cancer: Is It Helpful or Harmful?

The evidence is overwhelming: exercise is good for health. This is not new information, however it is relatively new for those battling a life threatening disease. Regular physical activity promotes physical and emotional wellbeing and can be especially helpful for cancer patients.


Conventional Wisdom

Traditionally, cancer doctors advised their patients to rest during cancer treatment. They directed patients to exchange activity for bed rest. Times of rest are still important for cancer patients today, but the avoidance of exercise is an outdated view.


New research shows that exercise is helpful for cancer patients . Regular physical activity can minimize treatment symptoms, improve cancer recovery and reduce the risk of recurrence. Exercise is safe for most patients during and after treatment.

The New Paradigm


Exercise is helpful for people with cancer, not harmful. One of the best gifts of exercise is the increased chance of beating cancer. A 2005 report in β€œThe Journal of the American Medical Association” (JAMA) reveals that exercise can reduce the odds of breast cancer death Β by half. Other research has shown similar statistics for prostate cancer.


Hormones influence the developments of breast and prostate cancers. High hormone levels can fuel the growth of cancerous cells. According to research, exercise lowers certain hormone levels and may reduce the risk of certain cancers by up to 50 percent.


A Better Quality of Life

Apart from helping patients physically fight and survive cancer, exercise can lessen their symptoms and help them feel better as well. Conventional cancer treatment, such as radiation and chemotherapy, are often debilitating and the side effects are often worse than the cancer itself. Symptom management benefits greatly from exercise.


Physical activity can diminish some of the side effects of medical treatment for cancer. Exercise reduces fatigue and improves energy levels. It builds muscle and bone strength, and relieves pain. It reduces nausea, prevents constipation and improves appetite. Furthermore, some cancer drugs can cause heart problems later on whereas exercise can help improve heart health, bone health and immune function. It helps cancer patients sleep better and control their weight.


Post Games Open Blues

I was moping around wondering why I felt sooo shitty 😦

And I realized that I was missing the excitment and adrenaline rush of not knowing what was coming next…OMG!!! I am addicted to CF

Guess I better get my ass in gear and start training to be able to do all the moves that Dave Castro is going to throw at us next year πŸ™‚

It is going to be exciting watching the Games this year…there are quite a few contenders that are pretty close in ability…mucho fun!!!

CrossFit Games Open 13.5 Results

I managed 11 thrusters in 4 minutes ….not much and yet it rates with some of the hardest, difficult and most painful things I have ever done…weird…and is making me want to do more …must be brain-damaged πŸ™‚

Every week I have approached the open cold turkey…in other words I had never done the standard or the motion before…take burpees for example.
-always used a parallette to get to a kneeling position
-then to a push up
-scramble back to kneeling
-use parallette to straighten out and stand up….you get the drift ?????

To do the proper burpee I watched Alexa (fellow CF) do her burpees over and over visualized for days even damn well dreamt about it and then did them..COLD…for the open…I was not able at this time to expend any energy in doing anything prior to the exercise except stretch. Every single motion I did was visualized, the moment Dave Castro told us what it was…that is all I thought about…I would look at how it was done and went for it.
I had never put anything more that 15lb over my head…never went below parallel on squats and the list goes on….

It actually took me about 3 months to be able the jump up on a 10lb plate…lol…I simply could not get both feet off the ground together…I would just stand there and push to try to jump upwards and nothing would happen…it felt like there was a conduit that was missing between feet and brain…now somehow I bypassed it and re-wired so that I can box jump 11″ and will get higher πŸ™‚

Oh well enough yakking…I have lots of work in front of me…can’t wait for next year

I CAN HARDLY BELIEVE IT !!!!!!!! πŸ™‚ I just may be able to do it….If I get past the 15 thrusters

4 minute AMRAP of:
15 Thrusters (100 / 65 lbs)
15 Chest to bar Pull-ups
*4 minute bonus for every 90 reps (3 rounds) completed.

Masters Women 60+
15 thrusters @45lbs..there is a catch I have never done thrusters with that weight 45lb a few with lesser weight like 30 lb less
15 chest to bar..and get this, the masters is a jumping chest to bar pull up ..mmmmm…interesting

Well it is the suck it up sister and lay it on…who cares that you are sick and running a temperature ( it may be better by Friday ) and anyway we have a saying in Crossfit that before you die you will pass out LOL πŸ™‚ I am banking on that πŸ™‚

Is the Spirit of CrossFit leaving us????

What is going on?
Are we becoming like everyone else?
Is the CrossFit community becoming the same backstabbing mean spirited bunch of twits as all the other sports?
We jump to conclusions and lambast other CrossFitters call them cheaters and dopers and worse.
When did we become like this?
We look after each others back. We encourage each other. We cheer the weakest on. It is NOT about winning ..IT IS ABOUT DOING THE BEST WE CAN !!!! and in doing that to keep striving to become more and better and HELP each other along the way.
I thought we actually had a community where we had no greed , envy, jealousy and just came together for the fun of pushing ourselves to the limit…

CrossFit Games Open 13.4 Results

DID IT !!! The 3 clean and jerks that is…however I am quite happy with what I found out in regards to the toes to bar..interesting that I actually managed the backswing and did get the knees up…and of course I did a swing down dismount πŸ™‚ LOL…feet were not far from the ground to start with…keep your hair on..

This is the most I have lifted overhead and with the hip action…I am very happy with the results and the way it feels πŸ™‚

Spoke with my coaches and told them that I am going to seriously start training for this. I have a year to push a bunch of moves and very curious to see what I can do next year.

Don’t get me wrong…there is no way that I could ever do this in competition :(. It is far to dangerous to take this outside of the box environment. Contrary to what people may think I am protected against people crashing into me, run away weights, stuff I could trip over etc. It would be madness???..or would it??? well I was thinking of entering the Hopper in July, however everybody knows me and would give me a wide berth.
The best thing is that Chris (the houseband) πŸ™‚ is always so supportive, as he says ” you are insured and I am the beneficiary ”
Good show for Chris as well…considering that last year he lost the full use of his left arm from the shoulder down and look at him now….almost a toes to bar…way to go Chris!!!! next year for sure…

Now chikadees….what is going to go down next week?….I hope.. hope.. hope !!!! πŸ™‚

There is a saying in my country , when you are very lucky, that you fell with your ass in the butter…. I just did…Wouldn’t you know that I may just be able to do this first movement

As many of you know reality for me right now is that I have no upper body strenght, barely got 55lb over my head…10 lbs more? πŸ™‚ we shall see.
Added issue is that for the last week I have been running a fever, bad headache, dizzy spells and lower back is very sore…infection is on the move again..BASTARD… However this will not ..I repeat NOT stop me from going for it…Now if I could channel Sam Briggs to do the toes to bar???? I would really have it made. If I can get the 3 clean and jerks behind me I shall hang like a piece of meat from the bar and see if my toes may magically levitate and touch it LOL (if you wish upon a star… )
I could pass out from the shock…please catch me if I do πŸ™‚
