The best plan of defense is to attack……

I am now pissed!!!! mightily pissed!!!!……no stupid bone growth is going to put an end to my fun…no way …

I have decided that I am going to wear it down….there are 2 schools of thought on this…one says to do gentle motions…the other says to aggressively exercise to try to maintain the range of motion that you have…..you all know where I am going don’t you?

The Dragon Boat Race practise was postponed because of inclement weather and we went to do a workout at the gym instead.

I could not believe how difficult Monday was..just a simple WOD of 5 rounds modified to: 200 m Row;7 squats; 7 push ups…it took me 15:41 to do it and I was drenched. This bone growth is impeding my motion at a speed that is ridiculous. What the Hell is this monster feeding on ? I can live with pain in the sides of the leg…however the groin is another story…that is where it catches on the upward motion and I have to use my arms for pulling to force myself to be able to stand upright after a squat…I can go down easily enough…the upward motion is the issue and I can’t push past the jam with my legs alone…will have to work on it…I am getting the trainers to think of what we can do to keep that joint working…for now squat is it…as deep as possible. As long as I hold on to a pole I can actually go so far as to sit on the back of my heels  without any hip popping issue  🙂

Well back to the fray…only now it is WAR…and I hate to lose…big time

May not have to get my “wings” clipped

Had a meeting with the Colonel on Wednesday and we discussed the usual stuff to do with the Crossfit WOD’s , motion, weights. Figured out that too much weight overhead is not good (pain) and we decided nothing over 20 LBS for overhead Squats,Jerks etc. We will be taking a closer look at all the Motion Ranges that I will be taping.

He has allowed me to paddle in the upcoming Dragon Boat races, however only if I can find a safe way to get in and out of the boat (lifting the leg to get in over the side of the boat is a big NO NO). My take on this is that we have all these guys that have super strenght….reading my mind are you….yes I am sure they can lift me into the boat as well  :).

As you all know I have  Heterotopic Ossification in both legs. I have started to feel a marked reduced range of motion (ROM) in the right leg (operated on the end of March 2010) and there is pain involved. The left leg which was operated on 15th July 2010 and had a partial revision 20th December 2010 is starting to hurt and both legs have areas that are quite tender and painful when pressure is put on them…they remind me of paper cuts….only from the inside. The Colonel feels that we may not have to operate …as previously discussed I do have a great pain tolerance and if the ROM loss stays what it is now…well I can work around it. The surgery would mean that everything is cut open again…the bits of ossification are snapped of the bones and then burned out of the muscles and soft tissues…and that is the problem…more soft tissue damage with no guarantee that they will not grow back…SO WE SIT AND WAIT…just like the Army…Hurry up and wait….talk about Deja Vu….

Anyway…should be a super day at Crossfit…looking forward to it ( I am a sick puppy) 🙂

Every day that I can do stuff is a great day…..may as well do everything I can and push that envelope…have fun..’cause you never know when it will end….live it to the MAX…..2 1/2 more months and I am off to Thailand….Yeah!!!!

Addiction….

I have come to the conclusion that I am addicted. How do I know that? Well let me put it this way…bloody fool is chomping at the bit to work out while having a spot of trouble with Montezuma. I did the WOD today and almost lost my lunch and felt decidedly wobbly. I can just hear the explanation to the Doctors, “Well I was working out when I passed out and fell and wrecked the left hip…then I came to and had cramps …wrecked the right one trying to get up to run to the washroom , yes and I dislocated my shoulder at the same time as well”….Hokay , the Colonel will lock me up after that one and my MD will tie me to the bed for sure. He almost took off from his chair when I said that we had entered the Dragon boat race at Crossfit…”NO…YOU ARE NOT ROWING ” sounded just the same as the Crossfit people when I put that idea forward. I am beginning to feel that way too many people have my number.

I sure feel like doing a Sally Field at the Oscars…you know that soppy tearfull…you love me…you really,  really love me…

THANK YOU GUYS

Not bad..

I did all 5 rounds of the WOD today…granted modified for 1 : 15 Power Cleans used 40lb; 30 situps used 1 ring(modified) it took me 14 min & change…

I have started to feel some pain in the right groin and mid thigh….wondering if my wings are sprouting ( bone growth ) I have them in both legs and once they stop sprouting the Colonel will go in and snap them off, hoping that it will be the end of them…there are quite a few. The infection has remained the same for the last 4 weeks, so we think that it is linked to the psoriasis.

All in all I am doing great (in my mind anyways). I have really become addicted to Crossfit…just love it…Guess a lot of it is the ability to move again…..Can’t wait until the next round  🙂

How can a girl get so lucky……

I feel like it’s Christmas every day. I just can’t believe I am so lucky. I have my husband Chris…friend ,lover, cook (yummy and really good…he is a keeper) without him I could not have come this far. We have been together now 31 years and it feels like yesterday. I think that the trick is that we make each other laugh and we do things together and have fun. Everyday is an adventure. Each morning the world is fresh and bright and you see with new eyes. We both work out at Crossfit and he supports me in everything I try. Well not everything (some stuff could hurt me) but you know what I mean. The owners of Crossfit Saint John who are going out of their way to make sure that what I do is as safe for me as can be…I get the resounding ” NO ” and get reined in pretty darn quick.

My family doctor, visiting me in the hospital every day, caring about what happens to me.  Racing around the ward with one of the nurses to see who was the fastest with a walker…I got her in the corners…darnit if she didn’t overtake me in the straight away. Little things…a smile , a kind word, a joke. The Colonel , my surgeon, an artist (bone instead of marble)..caring..and he can take my jokes and is a willing test subject for my baking experiments. His aide the camp, whose eyes smile and is so kind and funny and part of the baking testers as well (I have not poisoned them yet). My friend J-G who came to visit all the time even though he was on crutches and it was painful to walk all that way ( we both drive the same surgeon crazy).

I am surrounded by such nice people, all the work mates and managers , they supported me and still do, they constantly encourage me. My neighbours who are the nicest people you could meet, helpful and humerous…I could go on and on…I sure ran out of fingers and toes trying to list everyone .

I am humbled and so thankful to have these people in my life…It sure makes it fun…

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for making my life so full of joy…

Surgeon knows best……

PLEASE, PLEASE,PLEASE…never ever do any of these without your surgeon’s knowledge and approval.

Everyone is different in how they recuperate from total hip replacement. The material used may be different from what I have etc. etc.On top of that you all have to remember that by doing this I shorten the life of the lining. We have no idea how long this will stand up to what I am doing. Normal walking etc. gives you about 15 years…me we simply do not know… 5 years …less   more ? Who knows. There is no information as to how long it will last. However this is my choice and the Colonel and I are testing this and we will find out when he has to operate and do a partial revision to replace the lining. I think that the chrome cobalt ball should be okay…We’ll see

I see my surgeon every 2 weeks where we discuss what I am doing or going to attempt. Case in point, today we talked about box jumps and I got an emphatic and resounding ” NO “. I promised I would not and I WILL keep it…see, he knows I like to push the envelope but I won’t break my word…I am allowed to skip rope…in moderation on rubber mat, maybe 3 rounds of 25 every couple of weeks. definitely no running …so I row…..

Now you see why this is very important that any exercise program you may want to take is carefully thought out
