CrossFit Games Open 13.2

Well here we are :

AMRAP (as many rounds as possible) 5 shoulder to overhead 55lbs; 10 deadlifts 55lbs ; 15 box jumps 20″.

In my case I have never lifted more than 25lbs overhead (frowned upon to put weight over your head with artificial hips). Deadlifts are no problem, I regularly do 150lbs, however I do them from an extra 4″ above the ground to minimize strain on hips…so lifting regulation will be a challenge…did a practice couple of weeks ago and it was a strain, had to wiggle around a lot changing stance etc..

Box jumps are right out… 😦 they are deadly to me…if I want to wear my hips around my ears I will box jump.. If I wanted to do 20″ step up, the angle I have when I  would actually push up to stand on top of the box  will pop them for sure. That high a jump would have an incredible impact. I know because I can do a 10″ box jump and regularly do that when we have box jumps.

So realistically I will only be posting 15 reps if I can get 55lbs over my head that is 🙂

Stay tuned  🙂  tonight’s the night

I am in the CrossFit Games :) 13.1

Yes I know…have not posted in a loooong time…sorry…but here is the news. I have entered the Crossfit Games….I know 2 prostetic hips and being 63 this year…so what…I managed 18 Burpess..regulation with the 6″ jump at the end (had to be careful with that part)…and guess what…I am not even last in the world…there are 2 behind me ??? now that is weird

Anyway here is hoping that CF will have 13.2 on Wednesday starting off with a move that I can do without popping the hips….

FUN!!!!!  🙂

I’ve had better days……

Somewhere along the line I have to start feeling less wretched…We started UV Light therapy on Monday to try to eradicate the outside Psoriasis. Give the BUG one less chance of entering…So now I can’t tan anymore for the next 5 weeks, because they don’t want me to get a double dose…damn overkill is what I say..let’s go for it…but if I do they will notice because I will be brown (have to nix that one) 😦

I still have bad headache, nausea, tired and no strength. Fighting this shit takes it out of me. Now on the bright side it is making me lose weight 🙂

Going to move my treadmill to CrossFit location so that I can at least walk while watching everyone else have fun beating themselves up…feel lonely and left out doing zero…grrrrr….

It really looks like I will keep having to live under that darn sword….well sort of used to it…let’s see past 2 years..almost ..take a month or two:

surgery..surgery…infection…trip to Paris :)…infection…surgery (revision)….trip to Paris :)…small infection flare up…trip to Thailand :)….infection….Not bad I can live with that…just have to fit in trips in 🙂 between infections !!!!!

I am so very lucky to have all these people around me that make me laugh and I can have fun with…actually just landing in the hospital is like old home week…lol…nurses coming up from other departments during their breaks to sit and chat…a surgeon who does not mind being twitted and retaliates pretty good…everyone sniffing at the food that Chris brings in and wishing they had some (hospital food is baaaaad) see I have it good…in fact I am one spoiled beastie 🙂

Now stop whining and suck it up sister 🙂 life is not so bad…not in a bucket yet!!! And my wordsmith will be writing more stories that I can read…oh yeah..

The best plan of defense is to attack……

I am now pissed!!!! mightily pissed!!!!……no stupid bone growth is going to put an end to my fun…no way …

I have decided that I am going to wear it down….there are 2 schools of thought on this…one says to do gentle motions…the other says to aggressively exercise to try to maintain the range of motion that you have…..you all know where I am going don’t you?

The Dragon Boat Race practise was postponed because of inclement weather and we went to do a workout at the gym instead.

I could not believe how difficult Monday was..just a simple WOD of 5 rounds modified to: 200 m Row;7 squats; 7 push ups…it took me 15:41 to do it and I was drenched. This bone growth is impeding my motion at a speed that is ridiculous. What the Hell is this monster feeding on ? I can live with pain in the sides of the leg…however the groin is another story…that is where it catches on the upward motion and I have to use my arms for pulling to force myself to be able to stand upright after a squat…I can go down easily enough…the upward motion is the issue and I can’t push past the jam with my legs alone…will have to work on it…I am getting the trainers to think of what we can do to keep that joint working…for now squat is it…as deep as possible. As long as I hold on to a pole I can actually go so far as to sit on the back of my heels  without any hip popping issue  🙂

Well back to the fray…only now it is WAR…and I hate to lose…big time

May not have to get my “wings” clipped

Had a meeting with the Colonel on Wednesday and we discussed the usual stuff to do with the Crossfit WOD’s , motion, weights. Figured out that too much weight overhead is not good (pain) and we decided nothing over 20 LBS for overhead Squats,Jerks etc. We will be taking a closer look at all the Motion Ranges that I will be taping.

He has allowed me to paddle in the upcoming Dragon Boat races, however only if I can find a safe way to get in and out of the boat (lifting the leg to get in over the side of the boat is a big NO NO). My take on this is that we have all these guys that have super strenght….reading my mind are you….yes I am sure they can lift me into the boat as well  :).

As you all know I have  Heterotopic Ossification in both legs. I have started to feel a marked reduced range of motion (ROM) in the right leg (operated on the end of March 2010) and there is pain involved. The left leg which was operated on 15th July 2010 and had a partial revision 20th December 2010 is starting to hurt and both legs have areas that are quite tender and painful when pressure is put on them…they remind me of paper cuts….only from the inside. The Colonel feels that we may not have to operate …as previously discussed I do have a great pain tolerance and if the ROM loss stays what it is now…well I can work around it. The surgery would mean that everything is cut open again…the bits of ossification are snapped of the bones and then burned out of the muscles and soft tissues…and that is the problem…more soft tissue damage with no guarantee that they will not grow back…SO WE SIT AND WAIT…just like the Army…Hurry up and wait….talk about Deja Vu….

Anyway…should be a super day at Crossfit…looking forward to it ( I am a sick puppy) 🙂

Every day that I can do stuff is a great day…..may as well do everything I can and push that envelope…have fun..’cause you never know when it will end….live it to the MAX…..2 1/2 more months and I am off to Thailand….Yeah!!!!

The Bear Complex WOD (Modified )

“The Bear Complex”

5 x 7 sets of this sequence: No Bar…using Medicine Ball 6;8;10;14;16 and threw in an extra set with 20

  • Power Clean
  • Front Squat
  • Push Press
  • Back Squat (modified to front squat)
  • Push Press

During the warm up where I take a dowel and straight-arm pull it over my head and rotate arms behind my back ,to help shoulder motion. I suddenly sprouted a big purple bruise on the inside of my elbow??? I had blood work done yesterday???but I did a big work out in the evening and nothing…weird!!! It does not hurt anymore..it was tender for a bit…But I am tough did the workout anyway  🙂

This was a great work out…by the 3rd round I was sweating…even with lighter weight and the safety of the bench for the squat…round 5 I had to take a rest and then I had some extra oumpf and threw in # 6…a girl has to have some fun!!!

Yesterday (Monday) did a fun one as well:

5 rounds of :

3 Ring Rows

6 Push Ups

9 Squats

Did it in : 8:50   Cool…I am getting better at push ups…have a bit more upper body strenght…

Experiments in Motion #1

Did some playing around with motions etc. I will be posting these weekly with video on technique for each component :

STEP UP: Doing step ups with any weights hanging from your hands; be very careful and use technique every time…do not rush this…I could feel my hips bulge out each time I tried to go fast..the heavier the weight the more careful you will need to be.You carry the same weight on each side,  stand very erect, lift your foot and step up…be very conscious of your hip when you push up and take it slowly and evenly. DO NOT try to start with heavy weights…there is no EGO involved here…you start with no weight….then slowly build up….REMEMBER you are not in a contest…this is simply to give you balance and build up muscle around your hips.

ROWING : With rowing you have to be aware that by bringing your knees up to your chest you are in a position to pop your hips. I have found out by carefully doing the motion that it is minimized if you keep your legs together, do not allow the knees to open up as you bend your legs (I did and believe me it took a few days for the pain to fade away..I WAS LUCKY ). Allow your torso to lean right back on the pull and when you move your torso up and straighten your arms allow  the handle to go over your knees before you straighten out your legs.  STOP from leaning over to pull foot straps or to grab the handle..BIG NO NO. Please get someone to do that for you. Practice the motion slowly and build up speed and keep the same motion without deviation from technique.

Time to bite the bullett………

Still sick…tried the WOD on Friday and Mike told me to stop…cold sweat …had to run to washroom…etc. so I did some mobility stuff. Week-end came and went….still sick…yikes !!! when is this going to end???? So now I am fed up and will do the WOD regardless …as the guys at Crossfit say…” Balls to the wall ”

I was watching the Crossfit games over the week-end and am stunned that my 500M row is almost the same time as theirs??? (Masters Women 60+)what is with that??? Darn, if it wasn’t for the no impact promise I gave to the Colonel I’d be training for the games tomorrow….Oh well…wishful thinking…no point to it…however what I am allowed to do I can sure strive to beat their times…good goal that.

Addiction….

I have come to the conclusion that I am addicted. How do I know that? Well let me put it this way…bloody fool is chomping at the bit to work out while having a spot of trouble with Montezuma. I did the WOD today and almost lost my lunch and felt decidedly wobbly. I can just hear the explanation to the Doctors, “Well I was working out when I passed out and fell and wrecked the left hip…then I came to and had cramps …wrecked the right one trying to get up to run to the washroom , yes and I dislocated my shoulder at the same time as well”….Hokay , the Colonel will lock me up after that one and my MD will tie me to the bed for sure. He almost took off from his chair when I said that we had entered the Dragon boat race at Crossfit…”NO…YOU ARE NOT ROWING ” sounded just the same as the Crossfit people when I put that idea forward. I am beginning to feel that way too many people have my number.

I sure feel like doing a Sally Field at the Oscars…you know that soppy tearfull…you love me…you really,  really love me…

THANK YOU GUYS
